Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin and Councilman Oliver Baines Will Honor Future Leaders of Fresno

Fresno, CA – Fresno’s Leading Young Professionals (FLYP) is proud to announce the first ever Downtown Academy will graduate it’s inaugural class Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. at the Downtown Club in downtown Fresno.

The Downtown Academy is a partnership between FLYP and the City of Fresno.  It brought together senior-level business, government and community leaders with a group of  forward-thinking professionals to explore the following question: “How can we transform Downtown Fresno into a vibrant place where people can live, work and play?”

“The purpose of this Academy was to create a group of young professionals who could learn about what it takes to have a vibrant Downtown area and then become champions of the revitalization efforts taking place in Fresno,” said FLYP Chair Dawn Steele.  “We believe that the economic sustainability of the Fresno region depends on the development of our young leaders and the Downtown Academy plays unique role in that process.”

Those who participated in the program met once a month for ten months to learn about the changes taking place in downtown Fresno.  Participants learned about downtown Fresno’s history, discussed the values of good urban planning and practiced entrepreneurial thinking and behaviors.

The group was guided by Downtown and Community Revitalization Director Craig Scharton.  The program was made possible by the generous sponsorship of Granville Homes, Club One Casino and the Fresno Grizzlies.
