Fresno’s Leading Young Professionals is proud to announce its fifth Community Leader Luncheon featuring Fresno Assemblymember Linda Halderman on January 20th from 11:30pm-1:00pm at Campagnia’s.

There is no doubt that the Central Valley’s young professionals are already taking on leadership roles in our community. If you see yourself as one of those future leaders, we want to help you get there. To strengthen the ties between young professionals and our community’s key players FLYP launched the Community Leader Luncheon series. The Community Luncheon is an intimate lunch hosted every two months with the Greater Fresno Area’s civic, business and educational leaders. Based on the success of previous lunches with Councilman Nathan Magsig, Clint Olivier, Andreas Borgeas and Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims we are proud to continue our series with Assemblymember Halderman.

We will be collecting professional clothing over the next four weeks to be handed out to individuals in need within the Fresno community. If you have men’s or women’s professional clothing we will take them! Dress shirts, slacks, suits, blazers, blouses, ties, belts, skirts, sweaters…anything of professional nature can assist in helping someone looking their best for a job interview.

FLYP in partnership with Fresno Rotary is excited to announce the launch of its first Mentorship Program for young professionals in the Fresno area. This program is designed to connect FLYP Members with influential community leaders from the Rotary Club of Fresno to enhance both their abilities to lead, serve and connect within their areas of influence.  The goal of the program is to help FLYP members develop into Fresno’s future leaders by engaging in the community through relationships with seasoned professionals, knowledgeable and connected to their specific industry.

Selected FLYP members will be matched with industry specific mentors from the Rotary Club of Fresno for a year-long commitment, consisting of two hours per month. Mentees and Mentors will develop relationships through a series of one-on-one meetings, attending both FLYP and Rotary events, as well as participating in a culminating service project of their choice that benefits the community.

Who are Mentors?

• Mentors play a vital role in creating a positive, constructive experience for both mentor and mentees to grow through the program.
• FLYP has a strategic partnership with Fresno Rotary for Mentors in the FLYP-Rotary Mentorship Program.
• Mentor pairings are based upon industry knowledge in relation to experience and skills sought by mentees  Other considerations include chemistry, availability, and mutual gain between the mentor and mentee
• Participation in a few FLYP events is also a requirement for Mentors.

Who are Mentees?

• Mentees are seeking wisdom from someone with experience in their pursuits.  A mentee must be driven to contact mentees to arrange meetings in order to benefit from the program.
• FLYP is offering mentor pairings to paid FLYP members who are available & interested in the opportunity.
• Mentee pairings are based upon communicated needs and opportunity to develop networks with a mentor.  Other considerations include chemistry, availability and mutual gain between the mentee and mentor.
• Participation in a few Rotary events is a requirement for Mentees

When?

• Meeting times between mentor and mentee are self-driven by mentorship pairing and initiated by mentee.
• The commitment is 2 hours per month for one year
• The mentorship partnership will run from October,2011 – September,2012

Where?

• Meeting locations are determined according to the preference of the mentor and mentee team.  These meetings can be virtual, event-driven or in-person depending on the preference, needs and availability of the mentor and mentee team. 

 Requirements for FLYP Mentees

• Paid FLYP Members
• Willing to attend at least 2 Rotary events
• Self-driven to set meetings with Mentors
• Participation and coordination of culminating project

Background:

Fresno’s Leading Young Professionals (FLYP) was established as a means to encourage the professional growth and development of young, skilled leaders in the San Joaquin Valley.  FLYP’s programs are designed to identify and engage young professionals by encouraging them to actively participate in the community, giving them an opportunity to get involved through social networking, professional development, and community outreach.

Information and tips for the nomination process:

• Please seek the nominee’s permission beforehand, particularly since it is expected that award recipients will be present at the award banquet on November 18,2011, to receive his/her award.
• Please fill out the FLYP Award Nomination Form completely.
• All nominations must be received by FLYP no later than midnight on Thursday, August 18^th,2011.  Nomination forms and materials submitted will not be returned.
• Award recipients will be selected by a subcommittee of Fresno’s Leading Young Professionals (FLYP INC) Board of Directors.
• FLYP awards will be presented in the following categories:

LEAD:
This award is for a public official, public figure, or corporate leader in the Greater Fresno Area who has provided sustained and effective leadership to improve the lives of those that live in the Greater Fresno Area. The ideal candidate is a leader that demonstrates selfless service in promoting the Central Valley in a positive light and who has made demonstrable and significant changes to advance the professional community.

SERVE:
The award recipient must have a broad-based, continuing commitment to community service, public service and/or significant charitable or philanthropic contributions of benefit to the community, as reflected in a variety of activities, programs and initiatives which have served the needs of the professional community in the Greater Fresno Area.

CONNECT:
The award recipient must exhibit a passion for connecting individuals in the Fresno community.  The award recipient must have demonstrated the ability to connect multiple individuals and/or organizations to unite under a common goal that promotes positive change in our community.  The ideal candidate has the ability to bridge generational, professional and political boundaries to advance initiatives in support of the professional community in the Greater Fresno Area.

COMPANY OF THE YEAR:
This award is for a company that has demonstrated a continued commitment to developing Young Professionals in the Greater Fresno Area. The ideal candidate is one that has devoted resources to attracting, retaining, and mentoring young professionals.

Creating a Vibrant Downtown.

Fresno’s Leading Young Professionals (FLYP), in partnership with the City of Fresno, is launching its inaugural 2010-2011 class of the Downtown Academy. This project will connect senior-level business, government and community leaders with a group of 15-24 forward-thinking professionals to explore the following question:

“How can we transform Downtown Fresno into a vibrant place where people can live, work and play?”

Those who apply and are selected will meet once a month – for ten months – to learn about the changes taking place in Downtown Fresno.  In addition, participants will learn about Downtown Fresno’s history, discuss the values of good urban planning and practice entrepreneurial thinking and behaviors.

Urban environments have their own special planning, psychology, economics, design and politics.  For this project, we will use Downtown Fresno as our space to analyze and recognize new opportunities.  Opportunities are plentiful, but require a different skill set for the upcoming urban leader.  Participants will take what they learn at the end of the class to create an event or enterprise that attracts people to Downtown Fresno.
